Center on Patient-Provider Relationships (CPPR)
NERI recognizes the importance of understanding the patient provider relationship and its role in public health. Our research on the DP relationship incorporates qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods research on topics related to the provision of health care at an individual level; the influence of micro, meso, and macro-level factors on that provision process; and the effects of these processes on health outcomes. These could include (but are not limited to) social structural/organizational features of healthcare, social networks of patient and physicians, cognitive processes involved in clinical decision making, and doctor-patient interaction.
Current research initiatives include:
- Physician decision making for patients with co-occurring mental and physical illness (diabetes and schizophrenia)
- Factorial experiment examining variations in the off-label use of antipsychotic medications for pediatric patients
- The influence of patient characteristics, healthcare systems, and social networks on the pathways patients take to receiving medication
- Clinical decision making and the processes by which physicians classify medically ambiguous symptoms and develop treatment plans.
